Origins date back to the 14th Century!!! This antique (guessing early 1900s) Japanese Kotatsu is masterfully crafted with many fine details. My guess of the wood is Japanese cedar; the joinery is mortise and tenon. This piece is a decorative collectible now...

Let your imagination roam a plant stand, a stool for playing chess or cards at a coffee table... The front gate panel has cutouts for Mt. Fuji and a couple of cherry? The two side and one rear panels are stamped with Japanese characters/script.

The inside scripted floor mat appears to be single layer cardboard. Even the 8"x8"x4x4lb11oz charcoal burner block - fine and shaped cement with 4 quarter-sized stubs for feet and patterned outside surfaces.
