Here is a good Japanese classic yusen shippo (with standard wire) enamel cloisonné vase made by the Ando workshop. The vase is worked with a beautiful orchid with white and mixed deep red enamel with a touch of lightmint green enamels.
There are several leaves worked in various shades of green enamel. The background is worked with a light creme or beige enamel is in excellent vintage condition without any major faults such as cracks, chips, hairlines or restoration. There is a light patina that has formed on the outer rims over time but this very light oxidation is natural and cosmetic. It is interesting to note that this light colored background enamel is seldom chosen by most artist workshops due to the unforgiving nature of the light shaded enamel that can reveal any blemish or inconsistencies of the enamel; but the quality of this vase is pristine. The Ando artist workshop mark is stamped on the edge of the bottom rim. I originally acquired this vase many years ago as part of my delirious efforts to obtain as many examples of signed or marked works for my reference book on Japanese cloisonné. Specialists in Japanese art mostly agree that only around 7% of all Japanese cloisonné works are signed or marked by the artists. The height of this vase is approximately 7.3 inches. The width oft he vase is approximately 4.0 inches.
Overall, a fine quality cloisonne enamel vase made by one of the most respected and recognized workshops in Japan known for their artistry and innovation.
