The pairing appears original with some mirroring, however the scenes also appear complimentary rather copies suggesting they are from a historical story or poem. The detailing and gilt lining is very fine as you can see and note the pink cherry blossom in the trees. The vases are signed to the base for Hattori and also marked satsuma in Kanji. Hattori pieces are reasonably scarce and always of a high quality. Hattori concentrated on painterly styles with washes to provide naturalistic colour and extensive use of gilt, all as can be seen here.
This factory was also noted for the first use of cobalt blue on satsuma ware. Good examples, some gilt wear especially to the tops of the shoulders where the patterns are rubbed and around the bases. Fine crazing to the bodies as expected. Height: 29.5 cm (11 1/2 inch).Width: 16 cm (6 1/4 inch) max. Weight: 3740 grams (before packing).
