FREE PICK-UP IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA. Up for your consideration is a superb antique Meiji-Era Japanese cloisonné box, depicting a colorful floral scene The design implies a shoreline at night, and was made, c. It features a hummingbird flying amidst a black background, with bamboo trees and flowers resting above rushing waves. The box is heavy, and made out of solid bronze. The box measures aprroximately 1.5 tall, 5 7/8 wide, 4 deep, and is heavy, weighing about 2 lbs. In excellent condition; free of dents, chips, cracks, or dings. There is light surface wear to the black background on the upper surface, but nothing substantial or distracting.
The interior of the box has a mechanism that props the box open by 1/2. It works well, but I do not know the makers intention of this hinge, or whether it is working properly. The interior is a silvered bronze. The silver has mostly worn off, exposing the underlying bronze.
