FINE Japanese Meiji SILVER Cloisonne BOX Hou-ou PHOENIX Hallmark IMPERIAL YELLOW. NOTE: White spots in pics is glare from reflective surface-not on the item. Portrait of a Hou-ou / the mythical Phoenix bird on the lid. Hallmarked on inside lower mount, see pic.
I believe this is a mark denoting Pure Silver and possibly an artists hallmark as well, have a look, I don't read Japanese. Lined with the original deep teal blue or dark cerulean blue silk having woven symbols, in incredible condition. I lightened a couple of lining pics so the symbols in pattern would be more visible, the coloring is darker. Amazing rich coloring on the hou-ou or phoenix.
Background color is a very unique Imperial yellow also called chicken fat yellow. This yellow has a gorgeous depth to it.
The yellow color just as the hou-ou or phoenix is symbolic of the Imperial household. There is a dime in 1 pic of the lid for scale. No damage, no chips, cracks, loss or restoration. I don't think the silk lining could be more perfect. There is age appropriate light scuffing on the bottom consistent being seated in a cabinet, I wasn't able to capture a pic of it.
I have not polished the silver and leave that to new owner as desired. I'm sure it would polish beautifully with a polish cloth. Teeny pinpoint pits in enamel work occurred in making as is common, they appear much larger in close up pics than in hand. Please see full item description and all pics, many given. I send out an invoice within 24 hrs.
