Fine Japanese Enameled Box with Handpainted Details Signed, Pictured In Book
This charming Japanese enameled box is decorated with a hand painted flower in a rich pinkish-red enamel. The leaves are rendered in various shades of reddish brown and light green enamel. Generalized dealers often refer to these works as "Mission Style" where the natural beauty of the metal is emphasized with the edges of the box secured with rivets; please referto the images. The box is in excellent vintage condition without any major faults such as chips, losses or restoration. The floral design is highlighted by a hammered out (uchidashi) technique that produces a wonderfully enameled blossom in a high relief or raised surface. The base of the box is signed "Hide" by the artist. As many of you know, Ioriginally acquired this box many years ago as part of my delirious efforts to obtain as many examples of signed or marked works by artist workshops for my reference book on Japanese cloisonné.

Specialists generally agree that less than 7.0% of Japanese enamels are signed or marked by the artist workshops. This exact box is pictured on page 46 in Chapter 7, "Moriage-Jippo, " Raised up or piled up surface, " in Gary Yoshino's "Japanese Cloisonne Enamels - A Private Collector's Notes and Reference Guide. The length of this box is approximately 7.0 inches. The width of this box is approximately 4.25 inches.

The height of the box is approximately 1.25 inches. Overall, an attractive work in excellent condition that maintains a nice balance of the rich deep patina of the metal and the bold depiction of the flower blossom in relief. Due to the fragile nature of cloisonné enamels, this item will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care.

This item is in the category "Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Vases". The seller is "gyassociates" and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.
