EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE LACQUER WORK. Original Japanese black polished lacquer covers - originally from a 19th century photograph album - with fine gilt decoration and bone inlay. Two large panels of black polished lacquer, comprising the original upper and lower boards from a Japanese photograph album. The panels loose (no longer conjoined with a spine). Kimbei studio stamp on inside of upper board.
White paper pastedowns on verso of each board. Both boards with gilt and red coloured decoration, some areas in slight relief, and the upper board also with some bone inlay. The upper cover shows a farmer and his wife on their small holding, with a village in the distance. The lower board is decorated with two crickets, a butterfly and a ladybird, with plants.
