EXTRA FINE 1800s IMARI VASE 18 Inch Edo Meiji Ko-Imari Japanese Porcelain Byobu

MONUMENTAL ANTIQUE JAPANESE KO-IMARI VASE. Absolutely magnificent 1800s Imari porcelain vase.

Masterfully hand painted polychrome enamels depicting elegant and mystical figures. The surface decoration is fabulous! Intricately painted, with superb imagery around the entire exterior. The artist has spent a great deal of time with minute detail in the many figures who are clad in silken kimonos, and also on their surroundings from the beautiful folding screen behind them, the tables of incense censers, ikebana displays, and splendid gardens full of peonies, pine trees, rockeries, and delicate chrysanthemum blossoms. Even the individual pine needles and flower petals have been carefully rendered one by one with a tiny brush. The more one looks, the more reveals itself. Further, the neck and base are hand painted in elegant underglaze blue lappets of the most gorgeous shade, traditional to the period. At the neckline, there is additional complex brocade work in polychrome reserves, below which intricate botanicals and scrolling vines wind around the shoulder of the vase. The entirety is utterly exquisite, the quality of which is usually reserved for museums and reference books and very rarely comes on the open market.

Of significant and monumental size, measuring approximately 18.5 inches tall and 9 inches across. Draws attention from all the way across the room, and once the viewer gets closer, the splendid details become apparent and utterly enthralling.

This magnificent Hizen Imari vase dates to the Late Edo Period/Early Meiji Period of the 1800s, and is in excellent antique condition. See photos for all of the wonderful detail. Appears to have been carefully treasured for approximately 150 years by the fortunate owners. A rare treasure and an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of world class Japanese antiques.
