Antique Shakudo pendant featuring a stork standing beside a stream underneath a flowering tree. This is a beautiful piece of rare Meiji Period Japanese jewellery, dating to the late 1800s. Shakudo was originally used to ornament fittings for katana swords until the mid-1800s social reforms, when most swordmakers began to make purely decorative objects instead. Shakudo is primarily copper with, most often, 3 to 6% gold (up to 10% or even more on occasion).

The percentages are calculated for a specific color result and patinated with the traditional Japanese irotsuke technique which offers a durable, purplish black surface color when treated. The details are exquisite, with the water being etched into the metal and highlighted with silver, while the Crane, tree and foliage stand proud of the velvety dark background, highlighted with gold and copper. Condition is superb, with no damage to the panel and only light age wear on the gold overlay.

This really is a beautiful piece of late Victorian Japanese art. Size: 30mm x 23mm (not including hanging loop).
