Satsuma Ware Vase Meiji Period with Samurai, Geisha & Rakan, Fine Gilt Work

Satsuma Vase with Rakan & Samurai. A lavishly decorated mini Satsuma vase dating to the late 19th century and the Meiji period. It uses extensive gold work to form intricate patterns around the panels. The body is gently cloven like a garlic bulb. The main panels feature Rakan (people who have achieved enlightenment) and samurai warriors.

Interspersed are individual Geisha in smaller panels. Around the neck there are two panels, of a Rakan and perhaps a Shogun. The base has gilt script reading'Dai Nihon' (Great Japan) on the right and'Satsuma' on the left both reading vertically in kanji. A fine example as can be seen in the images.

Minor gilt wear to rim and foot rim. Light crazing - the crazing is an intentional feature on Satsuma. Overall a particularly good example. Width: 7 cm (2 3/4 inch).

Height: 14 cm (5 1/2 inch). Weight: 240 grams (before packing).
