Carved ittobori style (from one piece of wood) cryptomeria or cedar. The Ainu Indigenous people, residing on Hokkaido Island Japan for centuries, evolved a wood carving culture and later in the early 20thC an export business, until then these bear carvings had only existed as sacred objects.
